Trainer: Michael Stenning DSCMusic (Sydney) KA(Stuttgart) MAuSTAT
Michael Stenning has worked in OHS/Rehabilitation/Human Potential/Training for 20 years. He was certified as an Alexander Technique teacher in England in 1985 and has undertaken extensive post-graduate training. Michael developed and delivered an anatomy/physiology syllabus for A.T. teacher training in England in the early ‘90’s. He has also developed and delivered performance programs for musicians, athletes and latterly for computer-based workers. He recently undertook performance-related research with athletes, has designed ergonomic office chairs, and is currently completing studies in Learning Difficulties. The broad theme is always working intelligently to reduce strain, and to avoid or mitigate the risk of injury, while optimising performance. Michael incorporates a sophisticated and well-tested approach to posture, ergonomics, breathing, balance, relaxation, rehabilitation, occupational health, and pain prevention and management.
Since establishing his practice in 1986, in addition to teaching the Alexander Technique to individuals, Michael has provided longer-term consultancy services to the Australian National University. He has also presented dozens of workshops and lecture/demonstrations to Commonwealth and ACT Government Departments, many other organisations, health and sporting groups and to the general public.
Prior to 1983, as a musician, Michael played in Australia with ensembles as diverse as the Sydney Opera Orchestra, the Seymour Group and the Renaissance Players. In Germany completing post-graduate performance studies in 1980-82, he played with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Ludwigsburg Festival Orchestra, and as a soloist at the Metz New Music Festival. Michael also taught music at tertiary level. It was during this period that stress-induced injuries forced him to completely reassess his approach to performance and achievement.
Michael has helped thousands of people to overcome a range of musculo-skeletal problems including back and neck issues and overuse injuries. He has a particular interest in problem-solving in workplace environments.
In summary Michael Stenning brings the following attributes to his presentations:
• a successful track record as workshop leader with consistent good feedback from participants; • over 20 years' experience in assisting participants engaged in a wide variety of activities to recognise faulty patterns of use and to reorganise their body-awareness in a way that is useful to them; • the understanding that comes from having himself been through the same process.
